A few days ago, Apple released documentation for a new framework aimed at simplifying the transfer of third-party app data between iOS and Android. Here’s how it will function.
AppMigrationKit to allow ‘a one-time transfer of app data between Apple and non-Apple platforms’
Apple has introduced a new framework called AppMigrationKit
, which will be supported on devices running iOS 26.1 and later, as well as iPadOS 26.1 and later.
The framework, currently in beta like iOS and iPadOS 26.1, will enable developers to include their app’s data in the migration process between Apple and non-Apple devices, primarily Android for now.
It’s worth noting that the framework is specifically designed for data migration between Apple and non-Apple platforms, excluding migration between iOS or iPadOS devices. Developers can indicate whether their apps will import data, export data, or both by creating an app extension that conforms to the AppMigrationExtension
protocol and its subprotocols.
When setting up a new device, all apps implementing AppMigrationKit
will have their data included in the package. Additionally, developers can import cloud-stored data onto the target device post-transfer.
Transfer to Android
The AppMigrationKit
API will be integrated with the new “Transfer to Android” feature, as initially reported in May.
Apple is also developing an option under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone called Transfer to Android. Upon selecting this option, users will be informed via a splash screen about what can and cannot be transferred between devices during the one-time migration process.
Given that the feature will work both ways, Android will also receive a similar “Transfer to iPhone” feature, initially focusing on eSIM transfer.
Adopting AppMigrationKit
For developers interested in preparing their apps for the upcoming migration tool, Apple’s documentation provides details on app extensions, export/import operations, migration stats, and migration code testing.
It’s important to note that the framework is currently in beta and subject to change, as mentioned by Apple in the documentation.
AppMigrationKit
has not been officially confirmed for release alongside iOS 26.1 yet, but the availability of documentation suggests an imminent launch.
