Microsoft reported on Saturday that there may be increased latency for Azure cloud platform users due to multiple undersea cables being cut in the Red Sea, according to Bloomberg.
In a recent status update, the company mentioned that traffic passing through the Middle East or heading to Asia or Europe was impacted. The cause of the cable cuts and responsible parties were not disclosed.
The status update stated, “Undersea fiber cuts can lead to lengthy repair times, so we are actively monitoring, adjusting routing, and optimizing to minimize customer disruptions in the interim.”
As of Saturday evening, Microsoft confirmed that Azure issues were no longer detected. However, it appeared that other services were also affected, with NetBlocks noting that “multiple countries, including India and Pakistan, are experiencing degraded internet connectivity due to a series of undersea cable outages in the Red Sea.”
Reports from the Associated Press indicated that Yemen’s Houthi rebels had denied involvement in the cable disruptions as part of a Red Sea initiative targeting Israel.
This article has been updated to include additional information on affected nations and Houthi statements.
