iOS 26 is set to bring some exciting new features to Apple’s AirPods, including improvements in audio quality, sleep detection, and a camera remote. There may also be a small improvement hidden in the latest iOS 26 beta and AirPods firmware.
Code discovered in the latest iOS 26 beta by MacRumors indicates that the AirPods charging case now provides a clearer indication of its charging status and reminds users when it needs to be charged.
One beta tester shared an image of a new screen that shows two different shades of amber, possibly to differentiate between “Charging” and “Charge Case,” along with the usual green for fully charged.
It remains unclear where this screen is supposed to appear, but it seems to address the confusion surrounding the LED indicators for charging status. The new feature could help users easily identify when their AirPods case needs to be recharged, even when the lid is closed.
This enhancement in charging status notifications complements the new charging notifications in iOS 26, reminding users when their AirPods are running low on power and when they have been fully charged. These updates also require a corresponding firmware update for the AirPods.
Apple has introduced a public AirPods firmware beta for the first time, allowing users on any iOS 26 beta to easily update their AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4 with the latest firmware.
