Splitgate 2 Returning to Beta

Developers 1047 Games have announced that Splitgate 2 will be taken “back to beta” as they admit it was launched too early. The decision has led to layoffs at the studio, with 45 workers reportedly affected. The original Splitgate servers will also be shutting down in a month’s time.

The controversial launch of Splitgate 2 was further marred by CEO Ian Proulx’s appearance at Summer Game Fest wearing a “Make FPS Great Again” hat. Proulx later apologized for the incident, calling it a “boneheaded publicity stunt.”

In a statement on the game’s Steam page, Proulx and co-founder Nicholas Bagamian acknowledged their mistakes and outlined plans for a major overhaul. The game will focus on reworking progression, adding more portals, simplifying monetization, and reintroducing classic game modes.

Despite the setbacks, Splitgate 2 will remain playable as the studio works on updates and fixes. This decision comes as the second round of layoffs at 1047 Games this year, with an unspecified number of developers let go in June.

The studio also plans to shut down the original Splitgate servers due to financial constraints. They are exploring options for supporting offline or peer-to-peer matches to keep the game accessible to fans.

Our thoughts are with the employees affected by the layoffs, and we hope they find new opportunities soon.
