As a long-time fan of Bubble Bobble, I have been disappointed with recent games based on the classic Taito arcade game. However, Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons seems to be a promising addition to the series!
Although the game appears to be single player only, it stays true to the original Bubble Bobble gameplay with some new twists. Players can still play as Bub, use bubbles to trap enemies, and defeat them by bursting the bubbles. Additionally, the game features randomised levels, boss battles reminiscent of Rainbow Islands, and a new power-up system that allows players to purchase special abilities using collected ingredients.
Overall, Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons maintains the classic gameplay that made the original game so beloved. The game will be published by Arc System Works on PS5, Switch, and PC via Steam in the West and most of Asia this Winter. Japanese players will have the game published by Taito in 2026.
I am cautiously optimistic about this release and can’t wait for Winter to arrive.
