With the unveiling of the Fairphone 6 (officially known as ‘The Fairphone (Gen. 6)’), it’s evident that Fairphone has solidified its position as a leader in building ethically and environmentally conscious smartphones.
The Fairphone 6 builds upon the success of its predecessor, the Fairphone 5, and offers even more versatility and personalization without compromising on the company’s core values. This sixth-generation model boasts impressive sustainability credentials, with over 50% recycled materials, ethically-mined resources, renewable energy-powered factories, e-waste neutrality, and a commitment to fair working conditions and wages throughout the supply chain.
One of the standout features of the Fairphone 6 is its support for modular accessories, including lanyards, card wallets, a finger loop, and a flip case. While similar to Nothing’s modular accessory system, Fairphone has not made its system open source, potentially limiting the range of accessories available.
Despite focusing on sustainability, Fairphone ensures that the Fairphone 6 is a high-quality device built to last. It features IP55 and MIL-STD 810G certification for durability, Corning’s Gorilla Glass 7i for protection, and user-replaceable components, backed by an extended five-year warranty.
The Fairphone 6 also introduces new camera modules, including a Pantone-validated Sony main sensor for improved photography and video capabilities. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, offering a balance of performance and longevity in terms of software support and updates.
Fairphone commits to providing at least seven generations of OS updates and support until at least 2033, ensuring a long-term investment for users. Additionally, the Fairphone 6 offers a unique ‘Fairphone Moments’ experience, a distraction-free mode aimed at promoting mindful smartphone use.
The Fairphone 6 is available for purchase in the UK and Europe, priced at £499/€599 for the base model with the option to expand storage via Micro-SD card. US availability is expected in August, with more details to follow.
