WWDC25 tvOS 26 2

The Apple TV stands out as a unique device for its privacy features and long-term support from Apple. It is the most privacy-focused streaming device on the market and has possibly become the longest-supported hardware in Apple’s history.

The iPhone, known for its software longevity, pales in comparison to the Apple TV. The first tvOS-based Apple TV, released in 2015, will still receive updates to tvOS 26 this year, marking its 10th anniversary.

The original Apple TV, launched in 2007, differed greatly from today’s models. It resembled a short Mac mini and lacked streaming apps, focusing on content from iTunes. Over the years, Apple transitioned to a smaller black box design with streaming apps and introduced an app ecosystem in 2015 with the new tvOS operating system.

Despite the software update to tvOS 26, the 2015 Apple TV HD will miss out on some of the latest features like Apple’s Liquid Glass design, exclusive to newer models. Other features, such as Apple Music Sing with iPhone mic integration, are also limited to newer Apple TV models.

While older Apple TV models may miss out on new features, Apple continues to support the 2015 Apple TV HD with software updates. However, upgrading to the latest model may be beneficial for users seeking the full range of features on their primary streaming device.

What tvOS 26 Features Will Run on My Apple TV?

Some of the exciting new features in tvOS 26, like Liquid Glass design and Apple Music Sing, are exclusive to newer Apple TV models. Owners of older models may not experience the full range of enhancements offered by the latest software update.

Apple’s dedication to supporting older hardware while introducing new features highlights the company’s commitment to delivering a seamless user experience across its product lineup.
