The Nintendo Switch 2 Impact on Game Rankings

The recent release of the Nintendo Switch 2 has stirred up the rankings of games for this year in terms of critical scores. This shift can be attributed to the re-release of older games for the new console.

One notable example is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, originally launched in 2017, now considered one of the highest-rated games of 2025.

Not only is Breath of the Wild playable on the Switch 2, but it has also been upgraded by Nintendo to leverage the new console’s power.

These upgrades extend to Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, both available as paid Switch 2 Editions. This move has propelled Breath of the Wild to the top of the list of 2025’s highest-rated games, surpassing recent releases like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Blue Prince.

Currently, Expedition 33 and Breath of the Wild are tied with a 93MC score, followed by Blue Prince with 92, Split Fiction with 91, and Despelote with 89MC.

The reshuffling of rankings due to new releases has seen Breath of the Wild displacing other games like The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy.

With the impending release of the Switch 2 Edition of Tears of the Kingdom boasting a 94MC score, it is likely to shake up the rankings once again.
