Recent rumors have suggested that Apple is in talks to introduce VR motion controllers to Vision Pro in collaboration with Sony to support PSVR 2’s Sense Controllers. According to a report by 9to5Mac, this project is still in progress, with official announcements expected as soon as next week.
The report reveals that visionOS is set to include official support for PSVR 2’s Sense Controllers as well as gamepads from PlayStation and Xbox.
9to5Mac was unable to confirm whether the controller update will be unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next week or at a later date. However, Apple is expected to announce changes to visionOS 26 at WWDC, which will also impact macOS and iOS.
Since its launch in February 2024, Vision Pro has posed a unique challenge to VR developers. The $3,500 XR device currently only supports hand-tracking and Bluetooth accessories, pushing XR studios to either create new projects or add hand-tracking to existing games.
However, many games are designed around motion controllers, which could lead to more traditional and XR games being available on Vision Pro’s App Store.
While adding PSVR 2 controllers to Vision Pro may not significantly boost sales of the expensive headset, it indicates that Apple is moving towards embracing motion controllers in future iterations. This development follows reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, stating that Apple approached Sony in early 2024 to integrate PSVR 2’s controllers.
We will be closely following the keynote event on Monday, June 9th at 10 AM PT for any updates. Stay tuned to Apple’s YouTube Channel for live coverage.
