Nouvella Vague, one of the big hits of Cannes, just sold to Netflix

The relationship between the Cannes Film Festival and Netflix has had its ups and downs, but Richard Linklater’s latest film, Nouvelle Vague, is set to premiere on the streaming platform after its debut at Cannes. The film, mostly in French, delves into the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s iconic film Breathless, a significant piece of the French New Wave movement.

Despite being a movie about a pivotal moment in cinema history, there is uncertainty surrounding its theatrical release beyond the mandatory two-week window for awards consideration.

At the premiere, Linklater expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “Cinema is magic. It meant so much to us to try and recreate the time and place… everybody worked so hard to get it right and recreate this moment.”

Netflix has a history of acquiring films from renowned directors, even if it means sacrificing a traditional theatrical release. Nouvelle Vague will be available on Netflix this year, but its theatrical run remains uncertain.
