Enhancing performance and reducing weight are crucial factors in advancing standalone XR headsets. Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth discussed the limitations of wireless compute units for VR gaming in a recent Instagram Q&A session.
Bosworth explained that while wireless compute units offer some benefits, such as improved performance and thermal management, they also come with drawbacks like increased cost and complexity. Meta’s focus is on creating affordable and accessible products for consumers, such as the Quest 3S headset.
On the other hand, Meta’s Orion AR Glasses Prototype does incorporate a wireless compute unit, despite its high production cost. Bosworth hinted at future AR glasses for consumers, emphasizing that they may not be as budget-friendly as the Quest but aim to be competitive with other tech devices.

While wireless compute units have their place in certain applications, Meta is focused on delivering practical and affordable solutions to the market. The company’s commitment to innovation and accessibility will shape the future of XR technology.
