Valve’s Steam Deck Won’t See Regular Updates, Waiting for Generational Leap

Valve’s Steam Deck handheld gaming PC has gained immense popularity, but the company has declared that they will not be releasing frequent updates to the hardware.

In a recent interview with Steam Deck designer Lawrence Yang, it was confirmed that Valve is not planning on incremental upgrades to the device. Instead, they are waiting for a significant leap in computing power before introducing a new iteration of the Steam Deck.

“We’re not going to do a bump every year. There’s no reason to do that… we really do want to wait for a generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life before we ship the real second generation of Steam Deck,” Yang explained.

While the company did release an OLED variant of the Steam Deck shortly after the original LCD version, there were no substantial hardware upgrades apart from the display.

Despite the lack of a confirmed timeline for a new Steam Deck model, Yang did mention that Valve is actively working on a successor to the popular handheld device. Competitors like Asus have already entered the handheld gaming market, and rumors suggest that even Microsoft is planning to launch their own handheld gaming device.
