The long-awaited day has arrived for Xenoblade Chronicles X fans: the underrated Wii U classic is making its way to the Nintendo Switch.
Throughout the lifespan of the Switch, Nintendo has brought a multitude of titles from the less popular Wii U to its highly successful successor. While Mario Kart 8 has been a standout hit on the Switch, other titles like Pokken, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, the Pikmin games, and even the original Xenoblade Chronicles have made their way over. However, there was one game that even the most dedicated fans never expected to see on the Switch – Xenoblade Chronicles X. Surprisingly, Nintendo announced today that the mecha game is indeed coming to the current console generation.
Without the need for a Direct announcement, Nintendo shared the news on its various social media accounts earlier today. This version will be released as Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. According to Nintendo, the Definitive Edition will feature enhanced visuals and even some “brand-new story elements.” As someone unfamiliar with the series, I can’t confirm if these story elements are evident in the port’s trailer, except for a brief teaser at the end that resembles something from Kingdom Hearts.
What’s exciting is that the game is set to release on March 20, 2025, just a few months away. Interestingly, the Nintendo Switch was originally launched in March (specifically, March 3, 2017). It would be surprising if Nintendo were to release the successor, possibly the Switch 2, right before or after a new game for its previous platform, even if it’s just a port. So, we can likely anticipate the new console in April at the earliest. Currently, Nintendo seems preoccupied with selling alarm clocks, so an official announcement may still be up in the air.
